Why Am I Always Awake at 3:17 AM?

It’s 3:17 AM.

The house is quiet. The dog is asleep. My husband is snoring peacefully beside me, and somehow my brain has decided that this is the perfect time to replay every awkward conversation I’ve had since 1987.

Did I send that email?

Should I repaint the office?

What if I forgot to pay a bill?

Should I start a new business?

And why am I suddenly craving a grilled cheese sandwich?

If you’re a woman in midlife, especially one navigating perimenopause or menopause, you probably know exactly what I’m talking about.

The 3:17 AM Club

Nobody warned us about this part.

They told us about hot flashes. They mentioned mood swings and maybe a few wrinkles. But no one explained that our brains would decide to host a nightly meeting at 3:17 in the morning.

For so many women, this hour becomes a strange little ritual. We wake up for no apparent reason and suddenly become experts in worrying, planning, and overthinking.

It’s like our minds are saying:

“Since you’re awake, let’s discuss every life decision you’ve ever made.”

It’s Not Just in Your Head

Hormonal changes can absolutely affect our sleep. Declining estrogen and progesterone levels can make it harder to stay asleep, regulate body temperature, and quiet our racing minds.

Add in stress, aging parents, teenagers, work responsibilities, finances, and the endless mental load that women carry, and it’s no wonder we’re staring at the ceiling before sunrise.

Sometimes I think women deserve an Olympic medal just for functioning on four hours of sleep.

The Things I Think About at 3:17 AM

  • My kids and whether they’re happy.
  • My family and if everyone is okay.
  • Whether I drank enough water.
  • My podcast ideas.
  • The future.
  • The past.
  • Why I walked into the kitchen earlier and forgot what I needed.

And occasionally…

I start planning an entire life makeover before the sun comes up.

The Unexpected Gift of Being Awake

As frustrating as these sleepless nights can be, I’ve learned something.

There is something sacred about being awake while the rest of the world is sleeping.

It’s quiet.

It’s peaceful.

Sometimes it’s the only moment of the day that’s truly mine.

I’ve had some of my best ideas at 3:17 AM. I’ve prayed. I’ve journaled. I’ve laughed at myself for worrying about things that won’t matter tomorrow.

And sometimes, I simply sit there and remind myself:

You don’t have to solve everything tonight.

The answers can wait until morning.

To My Fellow 3:17 AM Friends

If you’re awake right now reading this, I want you to know you’re not alone.

There are millions of us lying in bed, kicking off our blankets because we’re suddenly hot, thinking about our kids, our dreams, our to-do lists, and wondering why sleep has become so complicated.

Take a deep breath.

Drink a little water.

Say a prayer if that’s your thing.

Listen to the quiet.

And remember:

This season of life may be exhausting, but it’s also transformative.

We’re changing, growing, and becoming new versions of ourselves.

Even at 3:17 in the morning.

And if you’re still awake…
